This file contains information about how you can continue to use ZIPPER
Payroll if you don't have the tax tables for the next year. This
information is supplied in the event you have obtained a shareware copy
of ZIPPER Payroll near the end of the year (or shortly after the
beginning of the year), and it does not include the tax tables for the
new year.
ZIPPER Payroll is configured to process payroll for only one year at a
time. At the end of the year, after you have processed all your
payroll, ZIPPER will "create a new year" payroll database so that you
can process payroll for that new year. Since it is likely that the tax
tables (federal and/or state) have changed, ZIPPER will not allow you to
process payroll for the new year until you have installed the new tax
tables.
It's a matter of timing! The tax tables are published by the IRS and the
revenue agencies within each state. Generally these tables are not
published until the end of the year. At SOFTCRAFT, we contact each of
the states to obtain their new tax tables, and during the month of
December the ZIPPER tax tables are updated. Some states are a little
slow in getting this information out, and our update is complete on or
about New Years Eve. Tax table updates are automatically sent to all
registered users at that time.
SOFTCRAFT distributes ZIPPER Payroll via the Association of Shareware
Professionals (ASP) vendor mailing. This means that the current version
of ZIPPER Payroll, including the new tax tables, is not received by the
shareware vendors until later in January, possibly even as late as
February. If you have received a shareware copy of ZIPPER Payroll for an
"old" year, you will need to follow the steps below to make ZIPPER
Payroll usable.
REMEMBER - IF YOU FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE YOU WILL BE USING OLD AND
PROBABLY INCORRECT TAX TABLES, AND YOU PAYROLL CALCULATIONS (TAXES
WITHHELD) WILL BE INCORRECT AS WELL. THIS WORKAROUND IS PROVIDED ONLY
FOR THE PURPOSES OF ALLOWING YOU TO EVALUATE ZIPPER PAYROLL AS A
SHAREWARE PRODUCT. THIS APPROACH IS SOMEWHAT RISKY, AND YOU DO SO AT
YOUR OWN RISK.
If ZIPPER Payroll is already installed, and you have been using it to
process payroll for the "old" year:
o Follow instructions in the User's Manual to Create a New Year.
o Exit ZIPPER Payroll.
o Copy the tax table 3 database files (ZIPxxTX1.RBF, ZIPxxTX2.RBF,
and ZIPxxTX3.RBF - where xx is the tax table year) from the "old"
payroll directory, to the ZIPPER Payroll directory you have created
for the new year.
o Use the DOS RENAME command to rename the tax tables database files
to reflect the new year.
EXAMPLE:
___________________ Note the different file
| numbers!
|
RENAME ZIP92TX1.RBF ZIP93TX1.RBF
RENAME ZIP92TX2.RBF ZIP93TX2.RBF
RENAME ZIP92TX3.RBF ZIP93TX3.RBF
||___________||
|_____________|
In the example above, it is assumed you are changing the 1992 tax
tables to be usable for 1993, and the DOS command is issued from the
directory where the new (1993) payroll database is located.
o Start ZIPPER Payroll (for the new year).
o Follow instructions in the User's Manual to install the new tax
tables.
When you become a registered user of ZIPPER Payroll, you will receive the
tax tables for the current year (you also get the tax tables for the next
year, when they are available, and one year of technical support). You
can then install the correct tax tables by changing the two character
state designation for your company: SYSTEM MENU, (1) Employer (Company)
Data, (1) Enter / Edit Company Data.
EXAMPLE:
In the Company Information screen, change your state from California
(CA) to Washington (WA). Press ESCape after you have made this change.
ZIPPER will ask you if you really want to make this change; indicate
"YES", you do). ZIPPER is now installing the new tax tables (but for
the wrong state). After this process has completed simply reverse the
process, and change your state back to what is should be. ZIPPER is now
installing the new tax tables for the correct state.
